Resava cave and Medieval Serbia

Grand ePanoramic tour

Tour to Resava Cave and Monastery Manasija starts from the hotel at the previously arranged time, (morning time, around 9AM).

Monastery Manasija is the endowment of the despot Stefan Lazarevic, the construction began at 1407., and it was completed at 1418. The monastery church is dedicated to the Holy Trinity. The whole complex has large walls around, which have served as a defence. It consisted of 11 towers, of which the tower of the towers, known as the Despot’s tower, stood out. Although only a third of the frescoes have been saved in the monastery, Manasije’s painting is one of the greatest achievements of medieval painting in Serbia.

After visiting the monastery, we continue our journey for about an hour to the Resava cave which is one of the oldest caves examined, it is about 80 million years old, and the oldest jewel found in it is 45 million years old. Resava Cave length is 4,500m from which it is explored up to 2,850m and tourists can visit the area which is around 800m long. A tour of the Resava cave accompanied by an expert local guide takes about 45 minutes.

After the tour we continue to the waterfall Veliki Buk or Lisine in eastern Serbia, on the slopes of Beljanica where we make a short break for lunch and break in one of the restaurants. The waterfall is located on the river Vrela, the right tributary of the river Resava. It is located about 380m of altitude, near the Resavska cave. According to the type of formation it belongs to accumulation waterfalls, formed by bigra accumulation. At the base, a not very deep lake was formed, surrounded by bigar blocks. Together with the spring of the river Vrelo it is under the protection of the state, as a monument of the nature “Waterfall Lisine”.

After that, we will return to Belgrade, the drive lasts for about 2 hours, arrival to Belgrade would be in the afternoon hours.

This wine tour is all about exploring One of the most famous wine regions is Sumadija region also known as a Serbian Tuscany. In the hinterlands of Kosmaj, Rudnik and Venčac, with Prokop and Oplenac, people have been growing grapevine from ancient times.

First stop on our wine tour is one of the most famous and first small private wineries in Serbia Radovanovic. Owner Miodrag Radovanovic, a professional with many years of experience, decided to plant 30 ha of vineyards in his estate and start production of one of the most famous wines today. Winery is located near Belgrade just 90 kilometers.

After visiting the very first private winery in Serbia we continue towards to the most modern one. By using state-of-the-art technology, following the world trends, scientific knowledge and tradition of generations, the Aleksandrovic Winery has become a leader among the winemakers of the entire Balkan region and has won a number of medals for quality at the world’s largest competitions.

On wine tour after visiting these two wineries our next stop is Oplenac, the royal complex of Karadjordjevic dynasty. One of the important parts is Royal winery which we will visit on this wine tour.

Complex of the winery was started by King Peter I Karađorđević, and after his death he was succeeded by King Aleksandar I Karađorđević. During the First World War, the graves were desecrated, but it has been successfully restored and today presents a cultural monument of exceptional significance. The jewel of the winery is a cellar which at that time it was the most modern basement, with modern equipment, built like French wine cellars. Even today it is very well preserved, so visitors have the opportunity to see how the king produced wine some 85 years ago. In the museum space on whose walls are the photographs depicting King Alexander I and Queen Mary in vintage, three bureaucas can be seen – a gift of burial for the wedding day of the royal couple from the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. On each of them are the initial verses of the anthems of every nation: the Serbian “God of Justice”, the Croatian “Our Beautiful” and the Slovenian “Next, Flag of Glory”. Barrels were made in each of these republics of dry Slavonian oak. The oldest boiler in the basement is from 1909.

Monasteries in Serbia – the medieval monastery tour

Monasteries in Serbia seen by medieval monastery tour is the great opportunity to discover Ortodox Serbia in medieval period. The valley of the kings or the Valley of lilacs is one of the most remarkable parts of Serbia. For seven centuries, the Valley of Lilacs and the Ibar River has been filled with the enchanting scent of this flower that constantly resembles the romantic story of the French princess, later to the Serbian queen, Jelena Anžujska. Namely, Serbian King Uros I Nemanjić wanted to meet his future wife in a special way, so he ordered that before her arrival along the inaccessible valley of Ibar planted beautifully flowered trees to remind the landscape of her native Provence. Jelena Anžujska contributed significantly to the cultural rise of the medieval Serbian state, she had the first library in the court and encouraged the copying of books in monasteries in Serbia.

Maglic is one of about two hundred similar towns of medieval Serbia, but for some it is still special and remarkable. Many consider it a classic example of Serbian medieval military architecture. He survived all the troubles and wars probably due to his inaccessibility, and his main function was to protect the road along the gorge connecting two church seats: Žiča and Peć’s patriarchate, as well as the entire Raska region from enemy incursions from the north. However, the most important function was his direct control and protection of the monasteries Žiča and Studenica, which are located not far from here. Maglic is located 20km south of Kraljevo. Maglic , conditionally speaking, has been constructed so that it has two courtyards: east and west, and within which there are remains of buildings: the church of St. George, patron and protector of the city, as well as large palaces, which some consider to be the court of the city masters and the other it was an archbishop’s palace. After the free time we continue our tour, heading towards Studenica which is considered one of the most important monasteries in Serbia.

Driving to the south, you reach the place of Usce, a small village at the mouth of the Studenica River in Ibar. Here the path for the Monastery Studenica is separated, and it leads to 11km. The foundation is Stefan Nemanja, who had withdrew to the Hilandar monastery, and his sons Stefan Stefan Prvovenčani, Prince Vukan and Sava Nemanjić continued their construction. In that period, Studenica became the center of monasteries in Serbia. This monastery is also the Nemanjic legacy, because it contains the remains of many members of the Nemanjić royal family. It is on the list of world cultural heritage. The central and most important temple is the Church of the Virgin, which is also synonymous with Studenica. The church is of exceptional beauty, made of marble, for numerous reliefs, barefoot and architectural decoration. The interior is painted with frescoes that are among the highest ranges of world painting and among the monasteries in Serbia.
