First stop on our Nis tour is the unique natural monument Devil’s Town which is located 288 km away from Belgrade, and 89 km from Nis, in the south of Serbia, near Prolom Banja. This natural monument consists of two very rare natural phenomena. The ground figures, as unique relief forms and mineral water sources with a very high amount of acidity make the place unique in this part of Europe. The surrounding natural environment is very specific, so it gives an even more mystical shape to the whole region. The area has been created to the soil erosion, because of the big amount of mineral water consists of 202 earth pyramids made of sandstone and marl, with “caps” on the top. Nis has been an administrative, military and trade center of various states and empires, which he belonged to during his long history. In the area of today’s Nis, which was th ancient town of Nais, two roman emperors were born – Constantine the Great and Constance III. Definitely the most significant part of Roman history of Nis is birth of Constantine the Great.Roman emperor who finally recognized Christianity as a religion declaring Edict of Milan. During long history of the town Nis,it was a major stop sight for all the travelers going from Europe to the Middle East.

Why is ancient Nis is one of the towns which were passing famous ancient Roman military road – Via Militaris which was connecting ancient Rome and Constantinople. Serbia was under the control of Turkish Otomans few centuries and during this period Nis was one of the administrative center for the south of Serbia and again one important stop on the way to the Istanbul.
