Smederevo Fortress and Viminacium tour

Smederevo Fortress and the Danube
Smederevo stands on the Danube, about 46 kilometers from Belgrade. In the early 15th century, Despot Djuradj Brankovic made it the last medieval capital of Serbia.
The main highlight is Smederevo Fortress, one of the largest medieval lowland fortresses in Europe. It served as an administrative, military, economic and cultural center of the Serbian Despotate.
The visit can also include the city center, the Church of St. George and the area connected with Karadjordje’s mulberry tree. This local landmark links Smederevo with the First Serbian Uprising and the story of liberation in 1805.
Viminacium Roman heritage
After Smederevo, the tour continues toward Viminacium, an important Roman archaeological site near Kostolac and the Danube. In Roman times, it served as a military camp and a major city in the province of Upper Moesia.
Viminacium helps visitors understand the Roman border, trade routes and military life in this part of the Balkans. Also, the site gives a clear contrast to the medieval story of Smederevo.

After arrival we will start sightseeing Smederevo. Gathering in the central city square, next to the fountain.

Karadjordje’s Mulberry tree
Karadjordje took the keys of the city from the then Turkish commander, thereby marking the liberation of Smederevo. It is also a botanical rarity, since it is over 300 years old.
Smederevo Fortress
From the square we head towards the Smederevo fortress, one of the largest medieval plain fortresses in Europe. With its position at the mouth of the River Jezava in the Danube, it occupies an area of approximately 11 hectares, it has the shape of an irregular triangle and consists of two parts – the Small and the Great City.
Back to Belgrade
After the guided tour of Viminacium which will take about two hours we will drive back to Belgrade. From Viminacium to Belgrade drive will take us about one hour.
