Viminacium is the biggest ancient Roman site in Serbia and it is located near Smederevo.

Smederevo was built in a very important strategic location. It used to guard the borders of the Roman Empire, and later it passed through the Via Militaris . However, this city was of particular importance in the early 15th century when the Serbian despot Đurađ Branković made it to the last medieval capital of Serbia. Smederevo is located in the central part of the country, on the bank of the Danube, and from Belgrade it is 46km away.

After arrival we will start sightseeing  of Smederevo center: Tour of the Temple of St. George The temple was built in the period 1850-1854. It was built on the model of the Manasija Monastery and the third largest temple in Serbia. In the immediate vicinity of the temple there is a Monument to the fighters of the First World War, as well as the famous Karadjordjev dud, which is a significant historical site, the place on November 8, 1805. Karadjordje took the keys of the city from the then Turkish commander, thereby marking the liberation of Smederevo. It is also a botanical rarity, since it is over 300 years old.From the square we head towards the Smederevo fortress, one of the largest medieval plain fortresses in Europe; represented the administrative, military, economic, cultural and ecclesiastical headquarters of Serbian Despotovina.

After visiting Smederevo, we are heading towards Viminacium. After an hour’s drive we arrive at the former legion camp on the Danube, and for some time also represented the capital of the Roman capital of Upper Mezia, which included most of Serbia, Northern Macedonia and part of northwestern Bulgaria. During the reign of Gordian III (239), the city gained the status of a colony of Roman citizens, as well as the right to mint local money. The status of the colony is the highest status that one city could acquire within the Roman Empire. Viminacium has been voted on several occasions for a concentration of the army and a starting point in many wars.

Smederevo Fortress

From the square we head towards the Smederevo fortress, one of the largest medieval plain fortresses in Europe.  With its position at the mouth of the River Jezava in the Danube, it occupies an area of ​​approximately 11 hectares, it has the shape of an irregular triangle and consists of two parts – the Small and the Great City.

Back to Belgrade

After the guided tour of Viminacium which will take about two hours we will drive back to Belgrade. From Viminacium to Belgrade drive will take us about one hour.
